Russell Vernons' Npower Championship Round-Up #1
Cardiff City returned to the top of the Npower Championship with a delightful 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers On Friday Night.
Saturday 15th December
Defender Mark Hudson opened the scoring for the Red Dragons around about the 30 minute mark, after a ball was worked out right to Craig Noone who then picked the centre-half out with a header he guided past Paul Robinson.
Blackburn's on-loan Manchester United striker Joshua King raced onto a delightful through ball and calmly placed the ball underneath David Marshall's legs to level the scores on the 50th minute. Cardiff did go back into the lead on 56 minutes when Craig Bellamy picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area and played a good one-two with Heider Helguson and took the return onto his left, outside of a defender, before firing past Robinson to put the Red Dragons back into the lead.
Cardiff then doubled their advantage on 83 minutes when Joe Mason fresh on after replacing Bellamy a minute before ran onto a Helguson flick and calmy slide the ball past the former England Keeper Robinson to make it 3-1 to Cardiff.
Cardiff eventually snatched a 4th goal with five minutes to go when Kim Bo-Kyung pounced on a loose pass in the middle of the park and broke away for playing a great one-two with Helguson on the left and cooly slotted home past Robinson.
During the Saturday Lunchtime fixture Derby County beat a Leeds United team unbeaten in their last 3 games by 3 goals to 1.
Leeds United v Derby started well for the first ten minutes, however it was Derby who struck first blood. The 17 year old Will Hughes won the ball in the middle of the park and played a great ball through to Conor Sammon and he slotted the ball past a wrong footed Paddy Kenny in the Leeds goal.
Leeds somehow against the run of play managed to get into the break all-square as former Derby midfielder and captain for the day Paul Green capitalised on a knock-down in the box to apply the finishing touch after good work from Lee Peltier and Luciano Becchio.
On 66 minutes Derby were back infront Leeds Defender Tom Lees made a decisive header in the six-yard box after a corner, but Derby scored from the resulting set-piece as Richard Keogh's shot was deflected home by his defensive partner Jake Buxton.
Leeds seeked for a leveller as Neil Warnock brought on El Hadji Diouf and the Sengal man sent a shot just wide of the upright with six minutes to go but in stoppage time the win for Derby was sealed when Derby's Ben Davies curled home a good goal to put the game beyond Leeds as Derby won 3-1.
In the 3:00 Kick-Offs Charlton & Brighton were held to a 2-2 draw Lawrie Wilson put the home side in front before Craig Mackail-Smith equalised for Brighton. Bradley Pritchard thought he'd won it for Charlton when he scored with just 20 minutes to go but how wrong he was when Kazenga LuaLua equalised again with 15 minutes to go for Brighton and the points were shared.
Elsewhere in the chase for the championship there were a few more 2-2 draws. Crystal Palace and Blackpool being another team to repeat this scoreline. Owen Garvan & Glen Murray put Crystal Palace 2-1 in front after Nathan Delfouneso had put Blackpool in the lead but Nouha Dicko earned Blackpool a point with a minute of normal time remaining.
Another game that ended in a 2-2 draw was at The John Smiths Stadium between Huddersfield & Bolton. Zat Knight put through his own net after 9 minutes to put Simon Grayson's Huddersfield ahead but goals from Mark Davies & Chris Eagles put Bolton 2-1 up and in control but with 3 minutes of normal time remaining James Vaughan levelled the scores and it finished 2-2.
There was also a 4 goal thriller at The King Power Stadium as Leicester and Barnsley played out a 2-2 draw. Anthony Knockaert put the Foxes in front on 9 minutes but then Stephen Dawson & Reuben Noble-Lazarus turned the game on it head before half time and the Yorkshire side went in at the break 2-1 in front but in injury time at the end of the second half Leicester's £1m pound striker Jamie Vardy made sure Leicester went home with a share of the spoils.
At Portman Road a brace from DJ Campbell and a Darryl Murphy goal gave Ipswich a 3-0 win over a impressive Millwall side, at the City Ground Goals from Dexter Blackstock & Billy Sharp helped Nottingham Forest beat Burnley by 2-0, while at London Road Peterborough lost 3-2 against Middlesbrough A brace from Faris Haroun put Middlesbrough 2-0 up after 20 minutes before Dwight Gayle scored a brace of his own to level the scores at 2-2 but with 14 minutes left Ishmael Miller won the game for Boro.
Watford Lost 2-1 at home to Hull City thanks to goals from David Meyler & Robbie Brady but Troy Deeney pulled back a consolation goal for Watford in stoppage time.
In the battle at the bottom in the Championship at Hillsborough Sheffield Wednesday lost 3-2 against Bristol City. Miguel Llera put Wednesday in front after 3 minutes but 15 minutes later Sam Baldock calmly converted a penalty to level the scores after Miguel Llera had adjudged to have fouled him. With 11 minutes to go Gary Madine who every Sheffield Wednesday fan i know rates him as "The Goal Machine" thought he'd won the game for the Owls when he put them infront for the second time of the afternoon but another Sam Baldock penalty after Madine handled in the box drew the scores level and there was time 2 minutes later when Albert Adomah won the game for Bristol City.
To the final game of the weekend at Molinuex as Wolves beat Birmingham 1-0 thanks to a Marlon King own goal on 34 minutes after Steven Caldwell had fouled Ebanks-Blake just a foot to the right of the Blues box and a yard in from the by-line. Sako put everything behind a low free-kick and King, stationed at the near post, volleyed the ball in to his own net as he attempted to clear.
